Verna Cole Obituary

Verna Mae Abrom was born March 4, 1946, in Madisonville Texas to two loving parents, Modine Whaley and Willie Abrom. She had three older siblings and 4 younger.

Verna grew up in the Mt Zion community and attended the Mt Zion Missionary Baptist church where she sang and remained faithful in the choir.  Verna was the church secretary and the finance clerk for many years. She was a faithful member of the church helping with the youth, marriage, women’s, and senior ministry until her passing.

Her love of singing led her to join the Huntsville Gospelettes with whom she sang from 1977 to 2003. Verna also trained her daughters from a very young age to sing and they traveled the surrounding areas singing God’s praises.

Verna attended school at Sam Houston High School where she met her husband, George Edward Cole in 1964. On June 10, 1967, George and Verna were married and had their first daughter.  Verna later graduated from Sam Houston High in 1968. Their love story was beautiful to see, and they remained in love until George passed away in September 2014.

While caring for her husband and children, Verna was employed as a school bus driver for Huntsville ISD driving the infamous bus #17 for over 20 years.  Although the bus was mostly parked in their home driveway she had no problem leaving her own children if they were not in the designated spot. She retired as a bus driver after 32 years of loyal service.

George and Verna had four girls together but “adopted” many other kids.  Their children had to get used to sharing their parents with the community, family, and friends. Everyone loved Verna Mae.  She was always laughing and singing, always sharing her opinion, and always giving and loving on others. She volunteered her time and service to the food bank and numerous nursing homes throughout Huntsville.  To honor her service to others, she was awarded the Humanitarian Award from Pat Oliphant for the City of Huntsville in December 2023.

Mama, Daddy, and their firstborn: Rachel, are all back together again in heaven. Mama always said, “Everything starts with love and ends with love.”

Verna was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Jessie Abrom, Willie Abrom, Rev. Buddy Ross, and Shane Ross, her husband George Edward Cole, and oldest daughter, Rachel Banks Cole. She is survived by her daughters, Erika Bryant, Tammie Franklin, and Georgetta Cole, adopted son and daughter, Eric McCarter and Paulette Stowers (Charles), her sister: Tommie Richards and younger brothers, Floyd Ross and Johnnie Ross, fourteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, additional relatives and many friends.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
