Verdis A. Haynes was born on November 22, 1930 to Vodie and Lottie Anderson Haynes in the Hopewell Community, Bedias, Texas.
Verdis received his formal education in the Hopewell Community and graduated from high school in Conroe, Texas. He continued his education at Conroe Normal and Industrial College, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity and he also received a Bachelor of Arts degree at Bishop College in Marshall, Texas. While receiving his education he was selected as a member of Who’s Who among the colleges and universities.
Verdis was a proud member of the United States Marine Corp., where he received an honorable discharge.
Verdis was married for the last 58 years to the love of his life, the former Bettye Griffin. She stood by his side during many years as he shared the word through his ministry. He pastored for fifteen years at First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville, Texas and twenty five years at New Chapel Baptist Church, in Bryan, Texas. He also served as Hopewell Community’s Homecoming president for several years and assisted with the building of the Watkins Clark Project Homes. He was very active in social activities in the city of Huntsville and Hopewell community.
Those that traveled to be with the Lord before Verdis includes his parents; siblings: Roy Lee, Earlie, Robert, Edgar, Vodie Jr., Pearline and Helen Marie. His memories will be cherished by his devoted wife: Bettye Jean Haynes; sisters: James Etta Butler, Earsie Archie; sister-in-law: Helen Haynes, a host of nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, additional relatives and friends.
