Mildred Taylor Green, known as “Sweet” by her parents and “Reat” by her siblings, was born on July 15, 1937, to Rev. Eli Taylor Sr. and Mary Lee Harrison (Walker) in Riverside, Texas. Mildred was the oldest of ten children.
Mildred attended school in Oakhurst, Texas, and accepted Christ at an early age. Mildred was known for her singing ability from childhood until the Lord called her home. She was in a popular gospel group at a young age with her dad, uncle, stepmother, and sister called the Southern Travelers. Their group traveled to many places near and far, singing for the Lord. When Mildred reached adulthood, she married Wilmer Green, Sr. Six children were born in their union.
Mildred started the well-known group, the Green Family, where she sang with her children, introducing each one of them to Christ. She and her children continued to sing and offer praises to God well into their adulthood. She also taught her grandchildren how to sing. Mildred attended Gospel Hill Primitive Baptist Church, where she served in various auxiliaries until her health would not allow her. She was one of the last three members of her home church. Mildred joined Unity of Faith Missionary Baptist Church under watch care in the last few months of her life.
Mildred worked as a lead cook at locally historic places like Sam Houston State University, The Red Onion, The Hitching Post, and The Texan Cafe. Cooking was her passion, and she enjoyed making meals for people, especially her family. Mildred was the matriarch of her family and was well known for her wisdom, way with words, and most of all, her love for Christ through singing.
Mildred passed away peacefully at her earthly home on July 22, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, stepparents: Virginia Taylor and Harry Walker, Sr.; brothers: Goree Taylor, Augusta Walker; and three children: Phyllis Marie Green, Wilmer Green Jr., and Jennifer Green-Glaze.
