Mattie Jewel Wynne Walker was born on September 24, 1924, the youngest daughter of eight children to Eddie Wynne, Sr. and Emma Holloway Wynne.
Mattie Jewel was a lifelong resident of Walker County. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined her parents as a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Mattie was a faithful, committed, and dedicated member who loved her church family and serving God. She was involved in numerous ministries including United Methodist Women, Communion Guild, Sunday School, St. Paul Sanctuary Choir, and Church Secretary, to name a few.
On February 24, 1946, Mattie Jewel married John Walker. To this union one child was born, a beautiful baby girl, whom they named Carolyn Jean. Affectionately called “BigMama”, Mattie Jewel was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother.
Mattie Jewel attended Rosenwald School where she graduated second highest rank as salutatorian. She continued her education by attending Mary Allen College where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. She later attended Prairie View University and earned her Master of Education with an emphasis in Reading. Mattie Jewel began her teaching career at Rosenwald School and later joined Huntsville Independent School District after integration. She worked in the teaching profession for 42 years.
Past community involvements were Huntsville Memorial Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary for 30 years, Friends of the Library, Community Organization for Missionary Endeavor (C.O.M.E.), Walker County Democrats Club where she served as County Election Judge, Huntsville Retired Teachers Association, and Heroines of Jericho #231.
Mattie Jewel is preceded in death by her husband, John Walker, daughter, Carolyn Jean Walker, great-grandson, DeMondre’ Walker, parents, Eddie Sr. and Emma Wynne, brothers and sisters.
She leaves to cherish her memories: grandchildren: Antoinette Desha James and Trina Kay Walker; great-grandchildren: Darvis Walker (Beatrice), Chelsea Stubblefield, Kris Massey, Akya James, and Charley James; great-great grandchildren: Malayah Walker, McKennah Walker, Kyle Davis II; godchildren: Mattie Sowells and LaShonte Greene, a host of nephews, nieces, additional relatives, and friends.
