Laura Rolling- Grant was a beautiful baby girl born November 29, 1934. The first child of the late Obie Rolling Sr. and Azzie Lee Smith- Rolling. Laura attended public schools in Huntsville, Texas and she graduated from Sam Houston High School in the class of 1954. Laura loved to sing and was a member of the school choir and numerous other activities at school. She attended Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas. Laura met and married her best friend and love of her life Rev. Willie E. Grant Sr. To their union, two children were born. Several years were spent on base at Fort Benning, Georgia, where Rev. Grant was stationed in the United States Army. Later they made their home in Houston, Texas. Laura was employed for many years in North Forest ISD as a substitute teacher and attendance clerk. She took the task of teaching serious and remained dedicated to the profession.
Laura was active in the community and her church, Providence Missionary Baptist Church. After retiring, Laura returned to Huntsville, Texas (the home of her roots). She opened a day care center and worked as a substitute teacher in Huntsville ISD. Faith was important to Laura. She never neglected her faith in God, and immediately became active in the church. Laura served as First Lady at Hills Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in the Galilee Community and True Vine Baptist Church in Phelps, Texas during her late husband Rev. Grant’s tenure. Laura later joined Unity of Faith Baptist Church and served faithfully for many years. She was a willing worker for Christ, and she loved her church family and friends. Singing in the choir, hosting, and setting up numerous committees and functions to benefit the church. She will surely be missed by all who knew her.
Laura was the matriarch of her family. She was a classy, respectable lady, and she loved her family unconditionally. Laura passed away Sunday, February 26, 2023. She is preceded in death by her husband Rev. Willie E. Grant Sr., parents Obie Rolling Sr. and Azzie Lee Smith- Rolling, brothers: Rev. Obie Rolling Jr., Elfert Rolling Sr., and John Rolling. Laura leaves to cherish her memories two children: Sherry Grant- Sigler (Ronald) and Wille E. Grant Jr. (Myoesha), four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three sisters: Mae Simmons, Maggie Wanza (John D), Jewel Rolling, and three brothers Kenneth Rolling, Nelson Johnson, and Sanford McGowen (Hattie) and a host of nieces and nephews.
