Joseph Castille Obituary

On August 13, 1948, in Delcambre, LA, Levi and Shirley Castille were blessed with a baby boy named Joseph Jerome Castille.  As a devout Catholic, his parents ensured that his walk with Christ began at an early age. He was baptized by the priest as a child and would later serve in the church as an altar boy.

Joseph’s childhood and adolescent years were very active. He excelled in academics, winning numerous awards and distinctions. He graduated from Jonas Henderson High School on May 27, 1966, and furthered his education by attending Southern University A&M, Baton Rouge, LA. He graduated on June 1st, 1970, with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He eagerly began his career as a Soil Scientist for the United States Department of Agriculture where he served for 38 years before retiring and immediately returning as an Earth team volunteer for 11 more years.

In 1972, Joe married Wilda “Jeannie” Lewis, the girl he met in his English class while at Southern. The newlywed couple began their life together in Huntsville where they decided to start and raise their family. In 1974, they became the proud parents of a little girl named April, and four years later would welcome another baby girl named Veronica. The couple believed in raising their family in a Christian environment and joined Greater Zion Missionary Baptist church. As an active member of Greater Zion, Joe served in various roles from the Deacon board, the trustee board, the Male Chorus, Treasurer of the church, and even taught bible study.

Joe loved his family and wanted to ensure that they were stable and always taken care of. Although his career required him to work in various locations in the region, he was adamant that his family would have a secure place to call home. Every morning, he got up early traveling to different parts of Texas such as Crockett, Madisonville, Bryan, and Centerville to name a few. Throughout his travels, he met and made lasting friendships. It was always said Joe never met a stranger.

Joe was very passionate about young people obtaining an education.  He sat on many boards and committees that gave away over a million dollars in scholarships, encouraged financial literacy and growth, and mentored young adults.

On February 19th, Joe heard the voice of God calling him home.   Although he did not want to leave his daughters, he knew he would be reunited by loved ones who had been gone on before. He was preceded in death by both parents, Levi and Shirley Castille, brothers, George and Carson, sister, Norma Griffin, and wives Wilda “Jeannie” Castille and JoAnne Castille.

His memories will be cherished by his two daughters, April Castille and Veronica Wingham, and his loving caregiver, Ms. Meikayla Watson.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
