Dorothy Evans, 69, transitioned on October 1, 2023, surrounded by her family, friends, and coworkers in her final hours in Huntsville, Texas.
Dorothy was born April 4, 1954, in Livingston, Texas, to the late Martha Lee Peco-Evans and Willie Evans of New Willard, Texas. She is the youngest of 7 children.
She attended school in Livingston, Texas. Passionate in running track for the Livingston school district and participated in the state championships in Track and field. She gave birth to her first child, a son named Carlos Evans, while still residing in New Willard, Texas, and later moved to Houston, Texas, to marry and gave birth to a daughter, Erica Gaines. She moved back to her hometown, New Willard, TX, and began working for Walmart, transitioning into the nursing field for Timber Wood Nursing Home in Livingston, Texas, for 12 years. Later, she moved to Lufkin and began classes at Angelina College, where she earned her degree in cosmetology. She changed careers; she relocated to Huntsville, Texas, where she started a new job with the state of Texas, working as a correctional officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (Estelle Unit), retiring after 15 years of service at the age of 64. Dorothy was an unselfish, hard-working individual, loving mother, grandmother, sister, and auntie. Her love language was helping and giving to others.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings.
Dorothy is survived by her two children, son: Carlos Evans (San Francisco, California) and daughter: Erica Gaines (Huntsville, Texas), three grandsons, Darrius Gaines, Rikki Scott Jr, and Michael Scott, and seven siblings. The eldest of the family is her aunt: Willie-Mae (Houston, TX), and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
