Obituary

Gloria Jean Johnson was born on October 14, 1941, in Huntsville, Texas, to the late Lillian Johnson Gaines and Rayfield Gaines. From her early years, Gloria displayed a vibrant spirit and a love for community. She attended Sam Houston High School in Huntsville, where she proudly contributed to the school band, beginning a lifelong pattern of dedication and service.

Over the course of her life, Gloria held various jobs that reflected both her strong work ethic and her compassion for others. She worked as a cashier at Weingarten Grocery Store, served as a bus driver for Greyhound, and concluded her professional career with the City of Houston, where she safely transported countless patrons across the city. Her reliability and kindness made her beloved by both coworkers and passengers alike.

Gloria accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful servant throughout her life. She was a member of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. L.V. Adams, where she sang joyfully in the senior choir. Her spiritual journey led her to become an evangelist, serving as a minister in El Paso, Texas. Upon returning to her hometown of Huntsville, she continued her faith walk as a member of First Baptist Church under the guidance of Rev. Otis Cunningham.

Among Gloria's proudest roles was that of a mother. She devoted her life to raising her five sons—Christopher, Zachary, Troy, Stirling, and Jacob—with unwavering love and strength. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Mercy Dee Shorter, and her beloved son, Troy Anthony Hooey.

Gloria's legacy lives on through her four sons: Christopher, Zachary, Stirling, and Jacob; her loving sisters, Nancy Good (Robert) and Carolyn Greene; nine cherished grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Her life was a testimony of resilience, faith, and love. She will be deeply missed yet fondly remembered by all who had the honor of knowing her.
